The first thing to do is turn the unit off and unplug it from the outlet.
Then look for obvious damage such as the discoloration of components or anything that appears to have burned.
Analyze the symptoms to narrow problems down to specific sections or circuits.
Look for blown fuses or circuit breakers.
Use a volt-ohm meter to check for shorted or open components. Replace them as necessary.
Use a volt-ohm meter to check the front to back resistance ratios of all semiconductors. Replace them as necessary.
Use an ESR meter to check all electrolytic capacitors in the power supplies and suspect circuits. Replace them as necessary.
Then turn on the power and measure all the power supply voltages.
Using a high voltage probe, check for high voltages if crt’s are present.
Using an oscilloscope, check test points for the presence of signals and compare levels with the schematic.
Tap or push on components to check for loose solder connections.
If a problem is intermittent, use a heat gun and freeze spray to check for heat and cold sensitivity of circuits and components.

Understanding Electronic Circuits

If you are interested in electronics, you are probably wondering how electronic circuits work.  It is basically a component of every electronic device that you can think of.  Without circuits, electrical currents have no means of traveling through the individual electronic parts of different devices.

An electronic circuit commonly consists of different electronic parts such as resistors, transistors, and capacitors.  The connection between these individual pieces is created through the use of wires or traces, which allows electricity to flow through.  The operation of a circuit can be basic or complex depending on the combination of the different elements.  Today, circuits are conventionally seen in printed boards where the various pieces of the outline are interconnected by soldering the parts to the board in creating a final product.

Circuits can be categorized into three forms:  the analog circuit, the digital circuit, and the mixed signal circuit.

1.    Analog circuits. This is a type of circuitry that uses energy in its original form.  It is best embodied by electronic circuit diagrams where the connections between the parts are represented by symbols (where wires appear as lines and different electronic pieces correspond to a specific emblem.)  For analog circuits, there are two basic constructions: the parallel circuit and the series circuit.

a.    In a parallel connection, every single electronic part is attached to the same source of energy.  The current that passes through the individual components of the circuit is divided between the pieces according to their particular resistance.

b.    In a series circuit, individual components are connected to each other in such that the current that will be used by a single part will be used by all the others.  In this connection, a failure in one of the pieces will result to a malfunction of the whole.

2.    Digital circuits. In this type of connection, energy is processed as a sample.  This means that signals are taken in by the device as a representation of logical and numerical correspondents.  The information, in this case, is processed and takes the form of a binary code.  Digital circuits are far easier to design than analog ones.

3.    Mixed signal circuits. This is a form of circuitry that uses both the analog and the digital circuits in its function.  It uses a mixture of both signals in order to achieve its various utility.  In most devices, analog circuitry is used to intensify the signals which prepare it for conversion into digital codes.

Circuit diagrams, on the other hand, provide you with a map of the electric flow. It is a means by which you can have an idea as to how the current follows a succession in an electronic device making it possible for you visualize how it functions.  The main reason for creating this representation is to provide an outline for the electric components as well as the wires and the paths that connect them.  A schematic diagram allows for the convenient repair of an electronic unit.  It also gives you ample time to troubleshoot an instrument at a convincingly faster pace if you know what you are doing.

Electronic circuitry is part of your daily life.  You may not realize it at all times but there are a number of instruments that require the use of these connections before you can utilize them.  In a way, you experience a lot of convenience in living because of the reliable circuits present in the different devices that you use everyday.

Imagine your life without circuits and you will definitely realize how important they are to you.  Without these electrical connections, life will be a bit more complicated and backwards.  Understanding electronics may not be your forte, but knowing how circuits contribute to its capacity to operate surely answers your curiosity and gives you a better appreciation of how electronic instruments work.

Question by Ed: What are the relative costs of development for a consumer electronics device?
What does it cost to bring a consumer electronics device to market? Development costs include:
The exterior design of the device and the development of its user interface.
The software the device runs on.
The hardware
Assembly, Packaging and Transportation

Other costs such as marketing and support are factors as well.

Very, very expensive. The cost I believe would be the highest, you dont even mention, which is the Research and Development of all the electronics that would be needed. Plus licensing costs of parts you get from other companies, costs to buy all the required parts, costs to manufacture, costs of factories to produce, etc. Very expensive.

Electronics repair: Why it’s essential and what you can do about it

Electronics and electronic devices are almost ubiquitous in modern society; without them the world as we know it would not be able to function. Every single industry and organization relies on electronics at some level, so it is inevitable that from time to time a vital piece of electronic equipment breaks down and is in need of repair. The cost of this repair can cause situations where customers may rather replace the piece of equipment rather than paying for it to be fixed, but with industrial electronics repair this may not always be the case.

In order to ensure the constant and smooth running of industry a reliable industrial electronics repair service must exist. Not all of these companies could be right for your corporation’s electronics repair needs, though, so many things must be taken into consideration before paying for the services of one of these companies. For instance, are the repairs you will need be of a general or a more specialist nature? Do your repairs amount to merely switching out broken components for new ones? If so, can your own employees complete such a task, or will you need the services of an electronics expert to do it?

When it comes to industrial electronics repairs it is, as a general rule, a much better idea to hire an electronics expert who will fully comprehend what your company’s needs  are and who can ensure that the task is completed as soon as possible. The number of companies who specialize in industrial electronics repair is huge, and many of them will be able to diagnose the problem very quickly and offer a reasonable price in terms of repairs and any new parts you may need. When you do need a specialist electronics repair, it is vital that you get the advice of a specialist electronics repair business in order to make sure that the correct measures are taken to fix the problem. Cutting corners with an electronic repair service can cause innumerable future problems and do serious damage to your company as a whole. As a final point, it is always worth training your employees in basic and general electronics repair, in the event that such a minor fix is all that’s required. This will save your business money, and it will reduce the time that your company’s equipment is out of commission. It is a good idea to work with an electronics repair company in order to ensure you are stocked with any minor replacement components that you will need for these minor repairs. You’ll need parts designed for the equipment you use, and you should not allow inexperienced employees to try and tackle specialist repairs.

Trust is a very important issue when choosing the best electronics repair service for your business. This choice is as much about trust as it is about the company’s expertise and experience. By researching a business before you hire them for their services you can ensure that you will be provided with high quality, professional electronic repair services and a partnership you can trust.
