Question by Trisha M: Samsung 153v LCD Monitor – Why Is The SyncMaster Series So Important In Electronics & Hardware Repair?
I’ve seen a lot of troubleshooting experts in Australia, Brazil & South Africa use this monitor to teach their students electronic skills. It also seems to be an integral part of their practical labs. Why is that?

Samsung 153v (part of the early SyncMaster LCD series) is one of the most popular 15″ monitors around. So people who want to repair LCD monitors use it as a baseline for repairing other, more complex machines.

Specially when you learn to repair the power supply & ‘dim display’ problems of the 153v, you can apply the knowledge to other models as well. It lends itself very well for reference and technical study. It’s also quite cheap to buy.

Question by Chii-chan: Electronics in tiny houses?
I am going to build my self a tiny house like the ones you may have seen in yahoo news a while back, but I’m curious…how do you get electronics to work in a tiny house? What powers lights,tv,fridge, washers, and other things? How do you even get running water in one of those tiny houses? I’m confused with this! Please explain. Thanks so much for your help and 10 points to the most descriptive explanation as to how I get electric and running water and stuff in this tiny house Im building!

The answers to your queries are here

The electrics, water supply and sewage disposal problems are the same as in a caravan park, and are solved in the same way. You won’t actually have much space for domestic equipment in the tiny house, so your electricity consumptions are not going to be high.

How do I repair home electronics?

Author: electroman  |  Category: Questions

Question by Bnpositive: How do I repair home electronics?
I’ve got an RCA home theater receiver. When you plug in the unit the “standby” light is on, but it won’t come out of standby when the power button is pushed. I thought it might be a blow fuse, but all of them look fine. I’d rather try and figure out what the problem is before it just gets dumped.
The multimeter idea is good, but I wouldn’t know what I was really doing with that. I tried posting something on Craigslist, but haven’t gotten much response either.
Okay, next question. If I take it into a shop, how much should I expect to pay someone to diagnose the problem accurately and give an estimate on fixing it?

I’d get an inexpensive multimeter (you can get one for 10 bucks at Sears). First thing, check the power cable with the continuity check on the MM. Then with power off, MM set to continuity check, check those fuses again. If they are all good, then apply power. Set the MM to volts put the black lead on a ground and check each side of the fuse with the red lead, start with the one closest to the where the power cord come in. If still nothing, then look at some of the components inside and see if you can any damage.

Good luck

What makes you think that there is a DC offset? AC power is transformer coupled, making the existance of an offset pretty unlikely. But if there really is one, you could eliminate by inserted a cap in series, or actually more like a bank of parallel caps, of high enough total capacitance that it inserts negligible reactance and good-quality-enough that they can handle the peak current without overheating.

But a slight DC offset should not be a problem for just about anything you plug in, even the things with an input transformer or motor.

Where can I get used circuit boards and other electronics giddies.

Question by justin h: Where can I get used circuit boards and other electronics giddies.
I’m an electronics hobbyist/ experiment who is always looking for new old junk to take apart. I visited a friends shop today where his father repairs and designs envelop stuffing machines. They have hundreds of old circuit boards and various parts for anything you could imagine. We took a walk around and found some old stuff he let me have. But I’m asking where I can find some more of this stuff there has to be other places that are just as full of stuff. What I plan to do with this stuff you may ask? I unsolder all the parts and make new things be it a robot or some sort of computer interface these old boards are loaded with parts. Thanks for any suggestions.
